DC
New Year’s Eve is upon us. 2009 is in the rear view mirror. So, what’s the play tomorrow night? I’m feeling a little low key today. But, by tomorrow, I could very well be in gear. And if I was hitting it, I’d probably be at Exo in The Lou, Love in DC, The Shrine in Chicago, and definitely at Bed in Miami. My young boo (I have a little crush), Fabolous, will be rocking out. I don’t know guys, but, NYE is a great night to get it in. Let me know what’s going on in your town. And by all means have fun, be safe, and I’m going to check ya’ll out in 2010. Love ya!!! Enjoy!!!!
Goapele

The ladies are working it out this holiday season! On the heels of Amele Larrieux, Goapele will be hitting the stage on Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. I have yet to see Goapele live but I do like her sound. Price point here is $22 in advance and $25 the day of the show. I also just discovered that Goapele will also be hitting the stage in DC on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Liv. For more information and to purchase tickets for both dates, check: www.goapele.com. Enjoy!!
Howard’s Homecoming

Friday 10/23, 6 am Crampton Auditorium–ya’ll better work!

I know one thing, DC is going to be on and poppin’ this weekend. If you didn’t go to Howard, we Howardites understand. If we love you enough we make you an honorary graduate (I’m not kidding). One thing you learn very quickly at Howard is that “Ain’t No Party Like an HU Party”. So, you better have your look, game, and everythingelse on point! Because ain’t no telling what could go down at Howard’s Homecoming ;-). You can find Mr. or Ms. Right, broker some deals, catch up with some of your old buds, or just kick it like a rockstar! There are parties and concerts galore. I’ve included all the parties that I’d be checking. If you are anything like me and my peeps, you better master the art of party hopping this weekend!!! If you are looking for other things to do in the District, here’s a shortlist:
- Chuck Brown will be rocking out at The Hilton in Rockville on Saturday (always good to check him if you can).
- I’ll update this with places to grab quick bites to eat later today!!
Enjoy!!!!
The Awakening

A little DC flava is coming to St. Louis this week. On October 10, 2009, The Awakening, a sculpture that was a mainstay at Hains Point in DC for 27 years is coming to Chesterfield in the Lou. The original Awakening was sold in 2007 by Sculptor, J. Seward Johnson for $750,000 and now is resting at The National Harbour in Maryland. The replica (copy if you will), valued at $1 million, was made possible by Louis Sachs owner of Sachs Properties and Foundation. The City of Chesterfield is developing sculpture gardens all around the county and will have about 20 additional pieces of Mr. Johnson’s work on display through October 31. I’ve seen The Awakening numerous times and it’s perfect to take the kids, tourists, and dates to check it out. It is a bit scary to look at after dark, which could be big fun. For more information, do check out www.chesterfieldarts.org. Enjoy!!!

Chuck Brown’s Way

It has been confirmed that a street will be named after Chuck Brown in Washington DC! A portion of 7th and T streets NW will be called Chuck Brown Way!!! And I love that it’s right in the hood where many of his supporters live and have lived. It’s not far from HU either in the Shaw neighborhood. Chuck Brown and crew will celebrate the renaming of his street at 4pm with a block party (at 7th & T) and an official concert/party for his 70 something birthday on August 22nd at the 9:30 Club. Dang, I sure wish I was in DC because me and my crew would wind it up in high fashion. And for those of you that might not know, Chuck Brown is The God Father of Go Go (He created the genre). And thus, is very deserving of this honor. The 9:30 Club is located at 815 V Street NW. Tickets are $25.00 and doors open at 9pm. Check 9:30 out at www.930.com. Enjoy!!!!!
Nine Lives of Marion Barry

Even though Marion Barry has not been Mayor of Washington, DC for years, He is still widely known as and still called, Mayor Barry. One of my fondest memories of “Mayor Barry” was when he came to speak to us students at Howard University during our infamous sit-in protest of 1989. We took over the Administration Building in protest of Lee Atwater, who was then chairman of the Republican National Committee, attempting to sit on the Board of Directors of Howard University. Mayor Barry had many problems over the years, including getting caught up in a sting at a hotel that was right around the corner from The Washington Post. I truly believe to this day, that he was set up. How can they have the press (ie Washington Post) and tv cameras hiding in the room? Anywho, HBO will broadcast a documentary on Mayor Barry on Monday, August 10, at 10pm EST and 9pm CST. Don’t let the media fool you, Mayor Barry holds an advanced degree in Chemistry, so he’s definitely a smart cookie. I’m sure you will learn something and get a laugh if you check The Nine Lives of “Mayor Barry”. Tune in!

Chuck Brown

One of my favorite artists, Chuck Brown, will be hitting up NYC in grand DC Go Go Fashion on June 17. 2009. DC, Howard University, and real music lovers stand up because Chuck and Co will be jamming at NY’s Rockefeller Park (Warren St & The West River). The last time Chuck played Joe’s Pub, Me, Dawn, Warren, and I can’t remember whoelse stayed for both shows and totally rocked out. I mean we were winding it up for both shows non-stop. Chuck is the Godfather of Go-Go and I think we celebrated his 70 something birthday with him in NY in Harlem a few years back, and I swear, Chuck doesn’t look a day over 45 or 50. And his crew, The Soul Searchers, and daughter are gonna blow the roof off of NYC. So if you know like I know, you better be ready to wind it up because Chuck is going to bring it. Tickets for this show are FREE. I’m sad that I’m going to miss it. Enjoy!!!!
