Howard’s Homecoming

Friday 10/23, 6 am Crampton Auditorium–ya’ll better work!

I know one thing, DC is going to be on and poppin’ this weekend. If you didn’t go to Howard, we Howardites understand. If we love you enough we make you an honorary graduate (I’m not kidding). One thing you learn very quickly at Howard is that “Ain’t No Party Like an HU Party”. So, you better have your look, game, and everythingelse on point! Because ain’t no telling what could go down at Howard’s Homecoming ;-). You can find Mr. or Ms. Right, broker some deals, catch up with some of your old buds, or just kick it like a rockstar! There are parties and concerts galore. I’ve included all the parties that I’d be checking. If you are anything like me and my peeps, you better master the art of party hopping this weekend!!! If you are looking for other things to do in the District, here’s a shortlist:
- Chuck Brown will be rocking out at The Hilton in Rockville on Saturday (always good to check him if you can).
- I’ll update this with places to grab quick bites to eat later today!!
Enjoy!!!!
The Awakening

A little DC flava is coming to St. Louis this week. On October 10, 2009, The Awakening, a sculpture that was a mainstay at Hains Point in DC for 27 years is coming to Chesterfield in the Lou. The original Awakening was sold in 2007 by Sculptor, J. Seward Johnson for $750,000 and now is resting at The National Harbour in Maryland. The replica (copy if you will), valued at $1 million, was made possible by Louis Sachs owner of Sachs Properties and Foundation. The City of Chesterfield is developing sculpture gardens all around the county and will have about 20 additional pieces of Mr. Johnson’s work on display through October 31. I’ve seen The Awakening numerous times and it’s perfect to take the kids, tourists, and dates to check it out. It is a bit scary to look at after dark, which could be big fun. For more information, do check out www.chesterfieldarts.org. Enjoy!!!
Nine Lives of Marion Barry

Even though Marion Barry has not been Mayor of Washington, DC for years, He is still widely known as and still called, Mayor Barry. One of my fondest memories of “Mayor Barry” was when he came to speak to us students at Howard University during our infamous sit-in protest of 1989. We took over the Administration Building in protest of Lee Atwater, who was then chairman of the Republican National Committee, attempting to sit on the Board of Directors of Howard University. Mayor Barry had many problems over the years, including getting caught up in a sting at a hotel that was right around the corner from The Washington Post. I truly believe to this day, that he was set up. How can they have the press (ie Washington Post) and tv cameras hiding in the room? Anywho, HBO will broadcast a documentary on Mayor Barry on Monday, August 10, at 10pm EST and 9pm CST. Don’t let the media fool you, Mayor Barry holds an advanced degree in Chemistry, so he’s definitely a smart cookie. I’m sure you will learn something and get a laugh if you check The Nine Lives of “Mayor Barry”. Tune in!

DC Color Purple–PRESALE
DC is really going to be off the chain, not just now, but from now until who knows when. The Color Purple is coming to town June 30-August 2nd for 5 weeks only at The Kennedy Center Opera House. Now, I’ve seen The Color Purple about 3 times. It’s a wonderful production. Sophia (Felicia P. Fields) is from the original Broadway cast and so is Doris (Kimberly Ann Harris). Kim plays lead church lady and an understudy to Sophia. She is just great (and one of my good friend’s sisters). So, if you make it, give her lots of love. Now, all I can imagine is what the red carpet will look like for opening night. I’m willing to bet that President Obama (that sounds great) and Michelle and their family with be there and etc. DC is really making moves. Read carefully: THE PRESALE IS TODAY. That means you can get tickets before they go on sale to the public. The code you’ll need is: 37020. You can make this happen online: www.kennedy-center.org or by calling 202-467-4600.
